Tips for glowing skin

Healthy, glowing skin makes such a big difference to our appearance. And you don’t always need to use make-up to achieve it. There are some simple changes you can make to your skincare routine and your lifestyle that will make a big difference to your skin.

I recently welcomed renowned make-up artist and hairstylist, Mira Parmar, onto my Face Yoga Expert podcast to talk about her tips for getting dewy, glowing skin naturally. You can catch up with that podcast episode here – we also talked about skincare and make-up products for spring/summer and Mira’s top tip for inner wellness.

In the meantime, let’s look a little closer at the five tips for glowing skin we discussed on the podcast. By incorporating these easy tips into your daily routine, you’ll soon see an improvement in your skin’s health, helping you get that dewy, glowing look every day.

1. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER

Hydration is so important to our skin, as well as to our overall health and wellness. Drinking enough water is a simple step you can take to improve your skin.

Water is vital for good blood circulation, so drinking enough will ensure a good blood supply to your skin. When you are well-hydrated your skins looks plumper and clearer, making it naturally more glowing. And of course, water is also essential for your overall health. Drinking enough throughout the day helps you concentrate, boosts your mood, and keeps your body functioning as it should.

How to make sure you get enough water: Although it is a simple thing to do, it is also easy to forget to drink enough throughout your day. Keep track of your water intake and set yourself the goal of drinking at least 6-8 glasses a day (approximately 1.9 litres), as recommended by the NHS.

2. GET ENOUGH SLEEP

Sleep is another essential that many of us don’t prioritise enough. While you sleep, your body repairs and replenishes your cells, including your skin. We all know how our skin can look dull and flat when we don’t get enough rest. But when you prioritise a good night’s sleep, your skin will be refreshed and rejuvenated.

How to get enough sleep: The NHS says we should all be aiming for between 6-9 hours of sleep each night. The best amount for you is down to individual preference – if you find it easy to wake up and feel well-rested, you are at the right level.

As well as getting enough sleep, you can protect your skin overnight by using a silk pillowcase. This smooth surface will be gentle on your skin and helps to prevent irritation and flare-ups. I love the Sleep and Glow pillow (use code faceyoga10 at checkout for $10 off) and pillow case which doesn’t crease your face during the night.

3. USE SPF DAILY

Making SPF a part of your daily skincare regime sounds like a small thing, but it makes a big difference to your skin.

Even in the winter, or when we are indoors most of the day, our skin is exposed to UVA rays from the sun. Although these UVA rays don’t cause sunburn, like the UVB rays we encounter on sunny days, they are still very damaging to our skin. You can protect your skin from damage by using an SPF on your face every day.

How to incorporate SPF into your skincare routine: SPF sometimes gets a bad rap for being thick and hard to apply. But formulations have come on a lot in the last few years, and many are now light and absorb easily.

Experiment to find products that work well for you and your skin. Everyone is different and the products that your friends or neighbours love won’t necessarily be the ones that suit you.

Start with tester pots until you find something you like, so you aren’t having to shell out for a big pot of a product that turns out not to work for your skin. Your SPF should come at the end of your skincare routine, after your moisturiser but before any make-up.

4. GUA SHA AND FACE MASSAGE

Facial massage is a fantastic way to lift and rejuvenate your skin, giving you that dewy, glowing look without having to use any make-up.

Face massage helps to increase blood circulation to your skin, reduce puffiness, and prevent wrinkles. Even just a few minutes a day can improve your skin and give it a natural glow.

You can make your face massage even more effective by using gua sha. This is an ancient Chinese massage designed to increase your circulation and reduce inflammation. It uses a smooth-edged massage tool, usually made from semi-precious stones such as jade or quartz.

How to use face massage: You can easily incorporate face massage into your daily skincare routine. Just take a few extra minutes to massage your skin once it is clean, before you apply moisturiser or any make-up.

For some ideas to help you get started, I have plenty of tutorials on my YouTube channel.

If you’d like to start using a gua sha massage tool to give yourself dewy, glowing skin, I have some beautiful ones available via my shop.

5. SIMPLE LIFESTYLE CHANGES

I believe that looking good starts on the inside. There’s a psychological aspect to having beautiful skin that is often overlooked. But when you feel better, your skin looks better too.

Making simple changes to your lifestyle that support your physical and mental health can boost your skin’s appearance too.

Making simple changes: Exercising regularly is a great way to improve our physical health and lift our mood. That rush of endorphins translates to better mental wellbeing. And it also does wonders for our skin.

The food we eat is also vital to the health of our skin. Choosing foods that are high in keratin, such as eggs, kale, sweet potatoes, and mango, helps to ensure we are getting enough of this protective protein. And incorporating lots of fruits and vegetables into your diet will also improve your skin – they are packed with essential nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants.

BONUS TIP: VITAMIN C SERUM

I promised five tips, but Mira and I couldn’t resist adding one extra. Using a serum that is rich in vitamin C as part of your daily skincare routine is another great way to get dewy, glowing skin.

Vitamin C brightens your complexion, evens skin tone, and gives you a beautiful glow.

How to use a vitamin C serum: You’ll only need a few drops of serum. Simply massage it into your clean face before you apply moisturiser.

I recommend using my Fusion by Danielle Collins Pro Lift Facial Moisturising Serum. It is full of powerful plant-based oils that are naturally high in vitamin C, such as rosehip oil, carrot oil, apricot kernel oil and green tea extracts.

And it is designed for use with face yoga and facial massage, so it is an excellent choice if you are going to incorporate massage into your daily routine.

That’s it – five simple tips for glowing, dewy-looking skin without using make-up.
